University of Warwick Lacrosse: A New Kind of Preseason
For the first time since all of us can remember, Warwick Lacrosse had a two-week preseason before the start of term! All of our returning players were excited (despite the rain) to be able to spend some time together on the pitch and get back to the sport we love (please tell me it’s not just us who had withdrawal symptoms over lockdown?!).
We were absolutely delighted to also be able to accommodate some of our fantastic freshers, both with and without lacrosse experience, and show them what our club is all about. Women’s Captains Abby Graham and Anna Monk took the time to help everyone brush up on their skills, running sessions focused on different areas of the game from day to day, even managing to run some little 6-a-side games at the end of the week to get used to the new Covid-friendly rules! Men’s Captains Reece Piper and Jack Barker took a slightly different approach, leading to a lot of sweaty boys at the end of their sessions (another reason we don’t mind training separately!)
Although we could not finish preseason with our usual ‘club curry’, due to the government coronavirus measures, we hope that all who were involved got at least a sense of the club’s community feel during our training sessions over the past few weeks.
Successful taster sessions during fresher’s week led to a promising intake of players across all years and abilities, showing great promise for the coming season. Our Women’s Development side (led by Hasna Virk and Lydia Owen-Morrell) are due to play Bournemouth Town Lacrosse on the 11th of October. The team is made up of mostly our new first years but also features some appearances from some returners trying new playing positions including goalie. We wish the girls the best of luck and can’t wait to cheer them on!
We’re looking forward to seeing where this peculiar year will take us!
